History
The long coat comes from the same Persian outcrossing used to rebuild British Shorthair numbers after the World Wars. Registries differ on what to do about it: TICA accepted the British Longhair as a separate breed in 2009 and FIFe in 2017, while CFA still treats the long coat as a variety of the British Shorthair rather than a breed of its own. Worth knowing before you ask us to verify a registration.
Living with one
Essentially the British Shorthair temperament under more coat: calm, self-possessed, affectionate on its own terms and not keen on being carried. Slow to mature at around three.
What British Longhairs are screened for
The panel is the British Shorthair's, for the same reason — the Persian ancestry that produced the long coat also carries PKD1, which is a one-time DNA test that only clear cats should be bred on. HCM has no DNA test in this breed and needs an annual cardiologist echo. Blood typing matters for the same neonatal isoerythrolysis risk.
