Where the breed came from

History

The Serengeti was developed from Bengal and Oriental Shorthair lines to produce a tall, large-eared spotted cat resembling a serval — but with no serval ancestry at all. It is domestic throughout, which is precisely the point of the breed and worth understanding before you pay a hybrid-sized price for one.

Living with one

Active, confident and vocal, with a good deal of the Oriental in the personality. Sociable and rarely shy.

What Serengetis are screened for

HCM echo screening and PK-Def are the usual asks. Because Bengal is in the background, PRA-b is worth asking about too.

HCM EchoPK-Def

This is what breeders in this breed commonly screen for. It is not veterinary advice, not a complete list, and Kittenry does not authenticate the documents a breeder provides — here is exactly what we do and don't check.

A common mix-up

The Serengeti is not a hybrid

There is no wild ancestor and no generation ladder here. If a seller offers you an “F2 Serengeti”, they are either using the term loosely or they do not know the breed — and either way it is worth slowing down. Bred from Bengal and Oriental Shorthair to echo the African serval's look without serval ancestry. Domestic throughout.

Before you pay a deposit

Four questions worth asking

  1. Can you confirm there is no serval anywhere in the pedigree?

  2. What are the parents' HCM echo dates?

  3. Are PK-Def and PRA-b results available?

And one rule that applies to every breed on this site: pay by credit card. Zelle, Cash App and wire transfers have no chargeback rights. Kittenry never handles your money — you pay the breeder directly, and we want your dispute rights intact.
