History
A natural breed said to have come from the port of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia, established in Britain in the late 1800s and rebuilt after the World Wars using Siamese and British Blue outcrosses. The modern standard admits only the blue coat.
Living with one
Reserved with strangers and genuinely devoted to its own people — a Russian Blue will often disappear when guests arrive and reappear the moment they leave. Quiet, routine-loving, and unhappy with sudden change.
What Russian Blues are screened for
This is a genuinely healthy breed with no widely established breed-specific DNA test, and we would rather say that than pad the list. What remains worth asking for is echocardiogram screening for HCM in breeding cats, PKD1 testing, and current FeLV/FIV status. A short panel here is not a red flag; an unwillingness to discuss it is.
