History
The Maine Coon is a natural North American breed — no wild ancestry and no generation ladder. It was a working barn cat in New England long before it was a show cat, and the heavy coat, tufted ears and long bushy tail are cold-climate adaptations rather than design choices. It is consistently among the most popular pedigree cats in the world.
Living with one
Sociable, tolerant and famously easy-going, which is most of why the breed is so popular with families. Large — males commonly reach 15–25 lb — and slow to mature, often not fully grown until three or four.
What Maine Coons are screened for
The Maine Coon panel is different from the hybrid breeds and it matters that a breeder knows it. HCM is the big one and there is a breed-specific genetic test (MyBPC3) as well as echo screening — ask for both, because a clear MyBPC3 result does not rule out HCM. SMA (spinal muscular atrophy) and PK-Def are genetic tests. Hip dysplasia is real in a cat this heavy and is assessed by radiograph.
