Where the breed came from

History

A natural breed from Russia, where forest cats of this type have been recorded for centuries. It reached the United States only in 1990, so American lines are comparatively young and pedigrees are worth reading carefully. The pointed variety is called the Neva Masquerade.

Living with one

Athletic, confident and unusually agile for the size — Siberians climb and jump more than their bulk suggests. Sociable without being needy, and slow to mature at around five years.

Health

What Siberians are screened for

PK deficiency occurs at meaningful frequency in Siberians and is a simple DNA test, so there is no good reason for it to be missing. HCM is screened by echocardiogram rather than DNA in this breed — the usual protocol is at one, three and five years, then every two to three years, with the first before a cat is bred. PKD1 is less common here than in Persians but is still tested by careful breeders.

PK-DefHCM EchoPKD1

This is what breeders in this breed commonly screen for. It is not veterinary advice, not a complete list, and Kittenry does not authenticate the documents a breeder provides — here is exactly what we do and don't check.

Before you pay a deposit

Four questions worth asking

  1. Are both parents PK-Def tested?

  2. When was each parent last echoed for HCM?

  3. How far back can you show me the pedigree — US lines are young.

  4. If you advertise hypoallergenic, what exactly are you claiming?

And one rule that applies to every breed on this site: pay by credit card. Zelle, Cash App and wire transfers have no chargeback rights. Kittenry never handles your money — you pay the breeder directly, and we want your dispute rights intact.
