A Persian in a short coat — same head type, same health panel, a fraction of the grooming. Bred from Persian lines and judged to that standard.
History
Created by crossing Persians with American Shorthairs in the 1950s and 60s, then bred back to Persians until only the coat length differed. It is judged to the Persian standard and Persian outcrossing is still permitted, which is why the two are effectively one gene pool.
Living with one
Persian temperament with slightly more activity — quiet, placid, affectionate and undemanding. The short dense coat still needs brushing, but nothing like the daily commitment a Persian requires.
What Exotic Shorthairs are screened for
Because the Exotic shares a gene pool with the Persian, it shares the panel: PKD1, PRA-pd and echo screening for HCM. The brachycephalic considerations apply here too — shortened airways, narrowed nostrils and compressed tear ducts come with the head type, not the coat. Ask the same questions you would ask a Persian breeder, because genetically you are largely talking to one.
