History
Descended from a handful of naturally hairless kittens found in Canada and the United States from the 1960s onward, outcrossed to Devon Rex and domestic shorthairs to build a viable gene pool. The hairlessness is a natural mutation, not an engineered one.
Living with one
Extroverted to the point of being demanding — Sphynxes seek out people, heat and laps, and do poorly left alone. They need warmth, and the skin needs regular bathing because there is no coat to absorb oils.
What Sphynxes are screened for
Congenital myasthenic syndrome comes from a COLQ mutation shared with the Devon Rex, inherited recessively, so a carrier-to-carrier mating gives a one-in-four chance of an affected kitten. The DNA test is settled enough that the GCCF made it compulsory for breeding Sphynx and Devon Rex in the UK. HCM is a serious concern in this breed and is screened by echocardiogram — there is no single agreed DNA test to ask for, so ask for the echo.
