Rhode Island has historically taken a stricter line on hybrid animals than most states. Later-generation cats are generally treated as domestic, but early generations are restricted and the detail matters. Check your local rules carefully before paying a deposit.

These rules apply to hybrid breeds — Bengals, Savannahs, Chausies and Cheetohs — because they descend from a wild species. They do not apply to Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Siberians, British Shorthairs, Persians, Sphynxes, Russian Blues, British Longhairs, Exotic Shorthairs, Toygers, Ocicats, Egyptian Maus, Serengetis and Highlanders, which are fully domestic breeds with no wild ancestry and no generation ladder. If Rhode Island's hybrid rules are a problem for you, those breeds are unaffected by them.
